A managed package provides important intellectual-property protection when an application is distributed to other Salesforce organizations. Salesforce ' s packaging documentation states that Apex classes and triggers contained in a managed package are obfuscated and cannot normally be viewed in the installing subscriber organization, apart from exposed global method signatures and specific support-access scenarios. Managed packages are therefore the appropriate model when a publisher wants to distribute an application while protecting proprietary Apex implementation details. A package does not need to be sold on a per-user basis simply because it is managed; free managed packages can be distributed. Unmanaged packages expose components for subscriber modification and aren ' t designed to provide the same provider-controlled upgrade and IP-protection model.
