A company is building an ecommerce platform that will allow customers to place orders online.

Amazon SQS is the AWS service built to decouple producers and consumers and to absorb variable traffic. AWS documentation describes SQS as a fully managed message queue that enables decoupling and scaling of microservices and distributed systems. AWS Lambda guidance also uses SQS as the standard pattern when a downstream component may be slower than an upstream one, because the queue durably persists messages and decouples the services. That directly supports frontend responsiveness during traffic spikes. It also supports reprocessing because messages remain in the queue until consumers successfully process and delete them, and failed processing can be retried. The ALB and direct HTTPS options do not provide durable buffering. Kinesis is possible, but for decoupled order processing and retry-oriented workflows, SQS is the more natural and simpler service.
