When planning a VxRail deployment, administrators must choose between a VxRail-managed (internal) vCenter or a customer-managed (external) vCenter. A VxRail-managed vCenter is automatically deployed during initialization and is tightly coupled with the VxRail Manager to streamline lifecycle management. While modern VxRail software versions allow an internal vCenter to manage multiple VxRail clusters within the same orchestration domain, its administrative boundaries are strictly confined to VxRail hardware platforms.

If a customer requires a single pane of glass to manage both VxRail clusters and existing or future non-VxRail vSAN clusters or traditional ESXi workloads, a customer-managed vCenter is explicitly required. An internal VxRail vCenter cannot license or manage standard legacy vSphere environments or non-VxRail vSAN nodes. Opting for the customer-managed model ensures that the centralized vCenter Server instance can accommodate heterogeneous infrastructure, matching corporate operational models and centralizing multi-cluster resource monitoring under a pre-existing enterprise license configuration.
