In the generation of Microsoft Defender for Cloud that this scenario reflects, the Log Analytics agent (Microsoft Monitoring Agent) extension is the component installed on a virtual machine to collect OS-level security signals -- including endpoint protection and antimalware status, security-relevant Windows event log entries, and detected threat or exploit activity -- and forward them to the Log Analytics workspace where Defender for Cloud ' s detection engine analyzes them and surfaces the results as security alerts in the portal. Without this extension enabled on each of the 50 virtual machines, the raw signals that indicate an exploit was detected on the guest operating system never leave the machine, so Defender for Cloud has no data to alert on. Vulnerability assessment for machines instead reports on unpatched software and configuration weaknesses representing potential exposure, not on exploit activity that has already been detected, so it does not forward exploit detections. The Microsoft Dependency agent supports VM insights process-and-dependency mapping for performance and topology monitoring and has no security-detection role at all. The Guest Configuration agent evaluates OS configuration compliance against Azure Policy definitions and likewise does not forward security exploit detections to Defender for Cloud. Therefore, enabling the Log Analytics agent extension on the virtual machines is the action that ensures detected exploits are actually forwarded to Defender for Cloud.
