SMB over QUIC is the SMB feature built specifically to let SMB clients connect to a file server over the internet without a VPN and without exposing the traditional SMB port, because it tunnels the entire SMB session inside a QUIC connection over UDP port 443, the same port used for HTTP/3 web traffic, meaning TCP port 445, the classic SMB port that is almost universally blocked by ISPs and corporate firewalls on the open internet, never needs to be opened at all; the requirement that inbound TCP 445 remain blocked from the internet is exactly the scenario SMB over QUIC is designed to satisfy, since it replaces that port entirely with QUIC ' s own transport. SMB Multichannel improves throughput and fault tolerance by using multiple network connections between an SMB client and server simultaneously, but those connections still use TCP 445 and it provides no internet-facing, VPN-less access capability whatsoever.
