Even if the initial accident only resulted in equipment damage and no individuals were immediately harmed, the structural integrity or operational state of the site may be compromised, posing a latent threat to workers or the public. Therefore, the absolute first step must always be to assess the immediate damage and actively eliminate or isolate any continuing hazards (e.g., shutting off power, closing valves, evacuating the immediate area, or erecting barricades). Initiating investigations, preserving evidence for insurance, or reporting to authorities like OHS are critical subsequent steps, but they must never precede or delay the immediate securing of the site. A professional must ensure the environment is physically stabilized and safe before turning their attention to administrative, legal, or investigative duties.
