Which feature defines a firewall as being next-generation?

Application awareness is the defining feature of a next-generation firewall. Traditional firewalls primarily enforce policy using IP addresses, ports, and protocols. NGFWs go further by identifying the actual application generating traffic, even when that application uses common ports or attempts to evade simple classification. This allows policies such as “allow this business application but block risky file-sharing applications” rather than simply “allow TCP 443.” Intrusion prevention is an important security capability often included in NGFW platforms, but it is not the single defining feature. Biometric security relates to identity verification, not firewall classification. Static inspection suggests older packet-filtering behavior and does not represent next-generation functionality. Application awareness matters because modern networks carry many applications over the same encrypted or web ports, and port-based control alone cannot distinguish safe business traffic from risky or unauthorized application use.
