The behavior described is a textbook indicator of time-based blind SQL injection. In CEH methodology for web application hacking, blind SQL injection is used when the application does not return database errors, query results, or verbose messages to the attacker. Instead of extracting data directly through displayed output, the attacker infers true or false outcomes by observing indirect side effects.

Here, the crafted input appends a conditional test about the database name’s first character. When the condition is true, the page response becomes “significantly longer,” which implies the injected payload triggers a database delay function or a time-consuming operation. This deliberate time difference becomes the communication channel: a longer response indicates “true,” while a normal response indicates “false.” By repeating such tests character-by-character, an attacker can enumerate sensitive values like database names, table names, and sometimes credentials—despite the application showing no errors or returned data.

This differs from Boolean-based blind SQL injection, where the inference is made through visible page content changes (for example, one response page looks different or contains different text when the condition is true). It also differs from UNION-based SQL injection, which relies on combining queries to return data in the application’s response, and error-based SQL injection, which depends on database error messages leaking information. Because the only observable signal here is response time, CEH classifies it specifically as time-based blind SQL injection. Defensive controls include parameterized queries, input validation, least-privilege database accounts, and WAF rules to detect time-delay functions and abnormal query patterns.
