A user reports that a laptop has intermittent internet connectivity while working remotely.

The technician should replace the Ethernet cable because the problem is isolated to the laptop’s wired connection. The laptop connects reliably through Wi-Fi, which demonstrates that the internet service, router routing functions, operating system, and general network configuration are operational. An Ethernet cable with damaged conductors, loose connectors, poor termination, or intermittent internal breaks can cause the link to repeatedly disconnect or renegotiate. Replacing the cable with a known-good cable is a quick and inexpensive isolation step. Restarting the router is less appropriate because wireless connectivity through the same router works correctly. Disabling the firewall would unnecessarily weaken security and would not normally correct intermittent physical-link failures. Installing another wireless access point is irrelevant because Wi-Fi already functions without the reported problem. If replacing the cable does not resolve the issue, the router port and laptop Ethernet adapter should then be tested.
