SNMP uses a manager-agent model. The SNMP manager, usually a network management system, polls devices or receives notifications. The SNMP agent runs on the managed device and exposes operational data. The Management Information Base is the structured database of managed objects, and object identifiers identify specific variables inside that hierarchy. Traps or informs are unsolicited notifications sent from the agent to the manager when configured events occur.
